Does anyone agree that "The Right Stuff" is probably one of the best "Patriotic" American movies ever made?? ?

I love this movie, it makes me proud to be an american, it shows you the resolve and ingenuity of our people, and its set to an awesome score. Or is it just me? What other movies make you feel this way? Excluding war films of course that's a no brain-er. Does anyone agree that "The Right Stuff" is probably one of the best "Patriotic" American movies ever made?? ?I would have to respectfully disagree here. Saving Private Ryan was 110% better than The Right Stuff. So was Apollo 13. That epitomized teamwork, coming together to save a doomed crew in outer space. And it's true. I remember it (not the movie) the actual events. We stayed glued to a little TV set in 1970, waiting to hear the latest and hoping and praying the crew would get home alive. The entire world held it's breath and waited on that one.

There are two issues: foreign DVDs are coded to play only on players that are coded for their region. North America is region 1, Europe is region 2 - I believe there are 6 regions. A small number of DVDs are coded region 0 which works in all regions.



European DVDs are made to normally play on PAL format TVs. US TVs play NTSC format signals.



You can purchase DVD players from www.dvdoverseas.com that will play all region DVDs - and which can translate PAL format to NTSC format.



There are cheap ones for as little as about $100. Browse on the site a little bit - read about what the features are and do - and good luck.

This would be what most news casters try to sound like. Except Barbra Walters, I'm not sure what is up with her accent.



Vally Girl is a broad idea in which the individual (mostly women) end all sentences with an upwards inflection. It mimics the inflection usually reserved for asking a question. It also gives the impression that the individual speaking in a standard Vally Girl manner is stupid (because it is usually true, but assess on a case by case basis).



The most difficult problem I have found with the Vally Girl speech pattern is my attempt to answer their statements. When they prattle on about mindless crap and state "I like puppies" (or some such) it sounds much like "I like puppies?" as if they just woke up from a coma and are learning new things about themselves all the time. I often want to answer "Yes, you like puppies", but experience has shown me this is not the way to interact with these people. Instead, I stare at their **** or, in the case of sub-par ****, I walk away. It is advised that all men do the same.

What is it about American music and movies that makes them appealing world wide. I didn't even relaize how much so until I moved to Romania and see Eminem spelt wrong on an elevator wall and Aerosmith playing in a gas station. What makes our music so appealing to people who cannot understand the lyrics or the meaning behind it. Movies I understand a little better but still why has no other country been able to pull of movies of such magnatude and worldwide popularity?What is it about American Music and Movies?Many young people who have grown up in the US really do not realize how much this country is the viewed with awe by many people in the world. In many places, America and everyting American has a magic to it. Most of the people in the world are not free, have little choice in life and exist from day to day.



Then there are extremely rich countries such as Middle Eastern Oil producers that still live under a strict shriah code. There are South American and Central American countries with no middle classes at all. There are only very rich and very poor.



There are socialist countries that have only poor. There are African countries that are in a constant state of turmoil and violence and abject poverty. There are small nations such as Japan that are very crowded.



All of these people look to America and see a country where even the poor have cable TV, cell phones, apartments and are overweight. Where supermarkets not only always have coffee but have thirty different brands and styles of coffee. They not only have meat everyday but whatever kind of meat you want.



Information is readily available. You can hear, see and read news from every conceivable point of view whenever you want. You can speak out against government officials without fear.



And most importantly, the LIBERTY! Americans can come and go anywhere at any time. They can leave the country on a whim and come back or stay away as they please. They can quit their job and get another, they can move to another part of the country they can live wherever they want.



This just does not happen in many other countries. Although many Americans do not appreciate it, this is still seen as "the shining city on the hill" and is held in the highest regard by many of the worlds people. To hear American music or see an American movie is to have a small bit of that wonderful, magical place at least for a little while.



This is not called the land of opportunity for nothing.

MIII the plot involves travel all over the world, and the movie will be released in other countries. Internationally known actors have a broader appeal. James Bond movies have the same international flavor. Audiences must like it because Hollywood keeps using it.

Many of the accents heard are not only British but European, Australian. Some of the top actors Clive Owen, Orlando Bloom, Jude Law, Heath Ledger, Ewan McGregor were born outside of the United States.

I have always wondered this! I am aware that there are international stars in Hollywood - this isn't the point (and of course James Bond has an English accent - as he's supposed to be English it'd be pretty funny if he didn't. Although, lots of bond actors aren't even English. Pearce Brosnan is Irish and we all know Sean Connery is Scottish - note for Americans - it's not 'scotch' it's 'scottish'. Scotch is a drink.).



English accents are the 'bad guy' accent of choice at the moment it seems. I think this is because Hollywood doesn't want to upset anyone by ever even intimating that an American could be a bad guy (so no baddie Americans, then) and it's not exactly politically correct to use the traditional German or Russian accent, so it's our turn to be the baddie, I guess!

Quite often because the actors themselves are from England.. English actors have a certain roughness about them- not all of course - that's perfect for bad guy roles!! It's down to stereotypes, sometimes it's eastern europe accents. Americans have a lower iq, they'll buy the myth that an english accent is bad because hollywood tells them so.
It has become un-PC to have anyone else as the baddies.
Good question, it's probably because we are one of the few countries who will be good sports and not take offence.



Another trend in Hollywood which is to change the nationality of the baddies according to who the US is falling out with at the time (remember Back to the Future and the Libyans..?)

The worst thing about American movies is how the movies are ruined to emphasize the fact it is american. Point in fact take the movie Miracle on 34th Street where all the mail for Santa is delivered to the court to prove he is Santa. Well, we call this cultural imperialism,son. The sad thing about it is that most people actually believe that America is much as Hollywood depicts it. So, they know about New York, from the Woody Allen films, and Crossing Delauncey etc., and they know about California. I had a huge shock when I went to live in Texas in 1977!! These days things have improved. Some films are shot in the American provinces, like No COuntry for Old Men, and Fargo. Moreover, America these days is a much more multicultural place. Even so, the predominant redneck culture of much of the USA does not get a proportional airing in the American media. Moreover, because of the Jewish influence in the media, Arabs an Arab Americans are still portrayed in a fundamentally racist way. Oh, and leave the French alone!! Just because they had the guts to avoid a war East of Suez, there is no needto keep making drogatorycomments aout them, as inNCIS and elsewhere. 'Up against the wall, redneck mother.....' Itis also worth noting that Hllywood films are still aimed primary at acne-riden American teenagers aged 15 or so, and thse would seem to constitute the voting population of California.

I avoid Hollywood films ("movie" is itself an Americanism!) that don't tell it like it is. I have no problem with American actors playing American characters using American accents, but I do object to hearing the words of Shakespeare uttered in an American accent, or of someone supposedly portraying Robin Hood using a foreign accent.

It works the same way with sex in the movies. We are bombarded by sex of all kinds, including adultery. Where it once would have shocked us, now we shrug and turn a blind eye, and accept it as being "the norm".



And societies morals crumble and decay, whilst we naievely wonder why sexual crime, adultery and divorce are on the rise.

I don't really know. But yes I do agree with you, there's no denying that their accents could play a part in how they become so succesful in movies. A lot of people think that the Aussie accent is sexy, so there could be some Aussie actors who may play their accents a bit up and down coz they know many people like to hear it. But I personally think that as long they don't do it to degenerate Australians as a whole, then I see nothing wrong with it. I highly recommend the first 2.Native american movies that take place in modern day?"Frozen River" is pretty good. It's about a Mohawk woman and a White woman who smuggle immigrants into the US from Canada through the reservation. Unfortunately, there aren't very many good movies that depict modern Natives. They're mostly either set in the Colonial era, the Old West, or are horrible B-films.

It's still perfectly understandable. First of all, Why wouldn't they? Depending upon the type of movie, certainly they would. Most of us have no accent. Southern, and Eastern Americans do have an accent, but it is recognizable for the most part. The words aren't slurred and mutilated. British or those from the UK have some heavy accents and are more difficult to understand. They don't try to mutilate the words.

Now here: the Drug/Gang type Rap lingo is not understood by normal Americans. Words are slurred, mutilated and unrecognizable. What is the point of that....? I doubt that anyone can understand that crap except for the targeted and selected group. I find it tasteless, without merit and a waste of money and time. I find it shows a lack of proper education, except for the education learned by living on the streets in poor neighborhoods. Nothing wrong with the poor, but we all have choices and can do better....(I grew up very poor....education was my choice) Promoting drugs/gangs......to the young and impressionable should be punishable by law.
