I love the movie "Dances with Wolves" it is amazing. It really shows how horrible Americans were to Native Americans. Sad concept but great movie. In your opinion which are the best movies about the native american culture and history?Just about anything with John Wayne in it.In your opinion which are the best movies about the native american culture and history?
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.
Dances with Wolves did a pretty fair job on the Souix culture of that particular time period. 'Billy Jack' wasn't bad either. But my vote has to go for 'Apocalypto'. It was outstanding. However, I don't think Hollywood has ever done a completly fair and honest treatment of Native Americans. First off, the only ones you ever hear about in most movies are the political favorites, the Plains Tribes., the Souix, Arapaho, Apache, and sometimes Comanche. You hardly ever see Pimas, Hidatsa, Karakawas, Tonkawas, Blackfeet, Sencas, etc...(except in Last of the Mohicans, but it was more about the White people than Eastern Indian Culture. They hardly touched on it at all).

I'd love to see Mel Gibson do an Anthology about the Native Americans, from the time they crossed the Land Bridge, up to modern times. The difficulty is that the term 'Native Americans' covers many, many different cultures, totally unrelated. There are few common denominators that can apply to ALL of them.

But it would a great bunch of movies, if done honestly, from both Indian, and non-Indian viewpoints. The truth is that the Indians were not ALWAYS the victims, and the non-Indians were not ALWAYS the oppressors. As with most historical subjects, the actual truth is much more complicated.

Maybe someday we'll get to see this.In your opinion which are the best movies about the native american culture and history?
The Last of the Mohicans

The Native people in this film are, for the most part, viewed as equals to the European and Euro-American characters. The historical simulations are well done, and the plot is very intriguing.

Dances with Wolves

This film has a lot of controversy around it. While some say it is an excellent film and does a great job humanizing Native Americans, others say it is not accurate to Lakota (Sioux) culture and is terrible at depicting Native Americans as a self-sufficient people.

Smoke Signals

This is a well done movie and does a great job addressing some of the conditions on Native American Reservations.Smoke Signals has a good depiction of Native humor, is well written, is well acted, and has very memorable characters.

Skins

Here鈥檚 another film depicting reservation conditions. This film has an in depth look at alcoholism and how it affects Native American people.

Lakota Woman

This film is made entirely by Native Americans. It tells a true story (in a dramatized way) about the 1973 takeover of Wounded Knee by the American Indian Movement. This film is recommended if you want to discuss political and civil rights issues in regards to Native Americans.

Windtalkers

The role of Native American people in the American military is an important topic. This film deals with racism in the military, and how it can be overcome. The use of Native spirituality is well done, and used in a proper context.

Squanto: A Warrior鈥檚 Tale

A surprisingly accurate film. The language used is authentic to the people of the region, the costumes are mostly accurate, and all Native roles are played by Native people.

A Man Called Horse

This film contains a partially accurate depiction of the Sun Dance ceremony. However, not all of the Native roles are played by Native actors. This film raises questions about non-Native people participating in Native culture.

Black Robe

This film is highly controversial. While some claim that it is an authentic historical representation of Eastern Woodland Native American culture, many modern Native people are offended by the image the film portrays.

Skins, Dance me outside, Pow wow highway, Smoke signal, Cowboy and Indians, Dream Keeper, Grand Avenue.

Being Native I like the movies that I mentioned.

Hollywood movies about Native American are ok.
Your question covers a lot of territory, for example:

The Incas and Aztec were obliterated by the Spaniards.

The Brazilian natives, by the Portuguese.

The Canadian natives, by the French.

The U.S.A. natives,by the British.

The slave trade to the Americas was initiated by the

Portuguese, and thereafter by the Spaniards, the British,

the Dutch, the French etc The reason you only see movies

about the U.S.A. natives is only because Hollywood is located

in California U.S.A.

PS

Allow me to clear up this for you: America is a very big

continent with many countries, U.S.A. is only one of the

American countries and happen not to be the biggest one,

Whenever someone refers to America must refer to the particular country in question otherwise is like someone talking about Europe with Portugal in mind.In any case i knew you were talking about the U.S.A.

I am Portuguese by birth and i attended Portuguese school,

and U.S.A. school, if i can be of any other help to you, kindly

just ask.Since you claim to be Portuguese, you should learn the truth.

My Favorit novel is: they bury my heard at wounded knee

Wish you good luck.
