Why do American movies glorify genocide?

American movies glorify the genocide that was commited against the Native American people by settlers. Films like ones starring John Wayne prtray the Natives almost as animals and show the perpretators of the genocide as gallant cowboys and heroes. In reality the Native Americans were defending their homelands and their famillies against foreign invaders and were the victims. These movies are no different than the mocvies made by Nazi Germany to dehumanise the Jews and to justify the persecution of the Jews. Many of these 'Cowboy and Indian' movies glorifying this genocide would have made Joeseph Goebbels prowd. It's the same thing. I teach in a high school and can show any movie with glorified violence, but nothing with nudity. OK, Americans today do not enjoy watching cowboy and Indian movies. Maybe a long time ago they were popular, but not today. Those movies are propaganda, they tell one side of a story and portray us as defenders, rather than what we were, invaders. Furthermore, the portrayal of Indians as savages is incorrect, they were fierce warriors, but not savages. The idea of living a nomadic life with primitive technology has no appeal. Because most people didn't know any better. You are correct that movies such as those were born from propaganda and lies. A huge engine for movies such as those were the Buffalo Bill Wild West Shows. These shows, while sometimes portraying the plight of Indians to the general public, also served to perpetuate stereotypes, and present the natives as a "lost" or "vanishing" race. These were the first "cowboy and Indian" movies.



My university requires an ethnic studies course and that is the only reason I know anything at all about Native American history. I learned very little about real Native American history in grade / high school.
Well, the Indians weren't Boy Scouts, either. They would gladly have done the same to the European colonists, but they weren't as organized, didn't have the military technology, and after they were decimated by European diseases, they didn't have the numbers.



Let's not get all teary eyed about the fiction of peaceful savages.Why do American movies glorify genocide?
