i know it sounds silly but i would like to know..Do british people need subtitles while watching american movies? No, we don't. It's all about exposure. British network TV is (and has been since the 60s) flooded with American programmes, so we can understand pretty much every American accent, from Brooklyn to Venice Beach. On the other hand, British-made programmes have never been shown on US network TV - they are always remade with American actors - so without that exposure I'm not surprised that an average American would struggle to understand the local accents in a film like Ken Loach's 'Kes' for example.Do british people need subtitles while watching american movies?
I don't think so, most American films seem to be released days maybe a few weeks to be released in the UK, but we (Americans) need almost every British thing dubbed with American voices or completely remade so we can understand it, so it can take months or years! (ex. St. Trinians')Do british people need subtitles while watching american movies?I really don't know but I think not. If anything us American need subtitles for British movies. Not for the language but for the words and sayings. They may have the same problems I had with some words. I with all my years figured out what a bonnet and a boot are on a car. Got loo figured out. I know what chips and crisps are. One that really through me was "Bob's your uncle".
Edit: Forgot to mention about TV. We used to get Benny Hill over here and I thought he was hilarious.
Actually its the other way round. Americans need subtitles to watch British films. Though my first language is not English( and I was taught British English at school), I find American English easy on the ears. But I have to admit that the British accent is sexier!Do british people need subtitles while watching american movies?yes all the time because the abuse of the english language by americans makes it impossiblefor us to understand.... nah, i'm joking. Surprisingly we manage to muddle through with our ears alone!!Do british people need subtitles while watching american movies?
Not normally, but really needed it when watching 'The Wire'
i've watched some brit films by ken loach and the accent was impossible so they had subtitlesDo british people need subtitles while watching american movies?
