I'm looking for things that take place in the past- not recent history.
I don't care if they are historically accurate or not. I'm just looking for something entertaining. The more romantic the better. What are some good movies about American Indians? The Last of the MohicansWhat are some good movies about American Indians?

Although ALL of those movies are amazing I am quite partial to Little Big Man. It is very funny, sad, and intense all wrapped up into one spectacular movie. It is difficult to narrow down all the fantastic Indian movies to one movie that is the "best". I guess the decision should be yours.

I know you asked for a movie, but you should track down a TV series from 2005 called "Into the West."
There's no way you'll be disappointed. There are as many Indian main characters as there are white, and it's a very well-made dramatization of the intersecting, generational stories of the two. Epic! Despite the tragedies, there's plenty of romance/adventure too.
Loosely based on many true, historical people and events.
I even noticed many details such as the removal of women and children after the massacre of a settlement's population during Christmas...the building where they were brought bore a sign above the door reading "Peace on Earth. Good Will toward men." -- That was an actual diary entry from a soldier who was present. History lovers like myself appreciate attention to such details.
