It used to be that numbers started with random prefixes, but people were actually trying out the numbers. When movies used to say real numbers a bunch of der-der-ders try to call. "Hello, hey your phone number is in the movie, yay!"
There are no real telephone numbers starting with the digits 555. People do indeed try calling numbers listed in films. One example is the phone number in Bruce Almighty that appears on Bruce's pager (God's phone number). The number is different on the DVD because the number shown in the theatrical release actually put the call through to a real household. The man living there had fun playing God to people's prayers ... until he realized that he was actually being *charged* to take the calls.



The same goes in movies with things like websites and screennames: they are either fake or lead to something promoting that movie.

555 is not a real prefix for a phone number (although I have dialed 555-1212 and got information...hmmm...).
