The mentality of many Hollywood producers is that they just want something that will sell tickets -- in the term "show business" they're concerned only with the latter word. So we're barraged with movies that pander to the masses. Lots of demographics studies occur, so they can aim stuff at the people most likely to plunk down money to get in -- the teens and twentysomethings. So for the girls we get inane romantic comedies, and for the boys we get action movies where something blows up every two minutes.
But of course, there ARE still quality pictures being made by Americans -- films with good scripts, engaging performances, exquisite production designs, etc. Hell, just yesterday I heard that a sequel to "Elizabeth" is about to be released, and I can't imagine Cate Blanchett signing on for it unless the script was excellent.
At any rate, I don't care what country good films come from, just as long as they make it to America. Last week I finally got "Central Station" on DVD. It's from Brazil, and is just heartbreakingly touching. Why does there seem to be no good American movies anymore?its become sort of mechanical like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. they get bigname actors, they get bigname director, they add LOTS OF SPECIAL EFFECTS, never mind no story, and its a movie.
its so insane easy to make, David Letterman show, Jay Leno and on every Oscar Night there is Billy Crystal making lampoon of the ' best' movies. the lampoons are really funny but the real message really is - your movies suck and this is what we think of it. thats what letterman and leno are saying. and the filmmakers and the actors just love the attention.
Simpson's did it all already. Why does there seem to be no good American movies anymore?Movies are cheaper to make these days so everyone and their dog are making movies to try to get a buck. Why does there seem to be no good American movies anymore?
In my opinion, all people want to see nowadays is fast paced, action/adventure movies or lame comedies with boobs thrown in here and there. Nothing subtitled, or "slow", or else they'll lose interest (if even the interest was there to begin with).
Fast paced movies sell, so naturally, those are the types of movies that are being made.
Basically. Seems to me like every movie that comes out of Hollywood is really dumbed down. I like a good foreign film but there's still a few good American ones out there. You've just gotta search a little bit. Gus Van Sant movies are always pretty good. Why does there seem to be no good American movies anymore?
You could do the same thing with any country's movies: Select a few standouts and don't mention the rest.
U.S. films are equivalent. We produce a certain quantity of excellent films that likely are shown overseas, ignoring much of the others produced.
Don't you realize we are seeing only a tiny sample of foreign films? I correspond with people throughout the world, and they think it's amusing that we see only a few of the good ones and never see the poorer films. So, we think filmmaking is better elsewhere.
For example, there's a world of music we never hear because we're focused on our own music industry. Yet, there is a lot of fantastic music out there we'll never hear unless something is a breakout hit.
If you skimmed the best of American cinema, you'd see what I mean. A BBC executive remarked that Americans tend to think that all British television is at a superior level. He explained, "You send us your best and most popular shows, and we send you ours." Both countries have plenty of poor series and good series; but, most of the time, we share only a select few.
Am I making any sense? Hollywood IS making remarkable films, but most people are busy turning the dregs of the film industry into hits. BUT, Hollywood and independents continue making some excellent/very good films.
Americans cant think of anything good anymore
it's because they keep making crapy remakes
you must not go to the movies much
Rocky Balboa
Harry Potter 5
Live Free or Die Hard
gee should i go on?
You are so right. I think its because movies like The Rock's new one open at #1. I think the last great American filmmakers are the Cohen Brothers and Wes Anderson. Movies and music today in America are in a terrible state. I think it is because people actually go out and still pay to see these atrocities.
